Celebrating Translational Biotech at Pitt

The University of Pittsburgh's inaugural Startup Signing Day marked a landmark occasion for life sciences entrepreneurship in Western Pennsylvania, celebrating the formal spinout and licensing agreements of university-born biotechnology ventures.

Among the featured innovators was ZegeneX Therapeutics, founded by Dr. Manush Saydmohammed and Dr. Michael Tsang. The company formalized its exclusive worldwide licensing agreement with the University of Pittsburgh for core composition-of-matter intellectual property covering small-molecule regenerative wound healing agents.

Bridging Academic Discovery and Clinical Execution

University leadership, venture partners, and regional life sciences leaders gathered at the University Club to celebrate the transition of high-impact discoveries from Pitt's developmental biology laboratories into commercially viable therapeutic candidates designed to solve urgent global medical needs.

"Our mission at ZegeneX is simple yet urgent: to eliminate avoidable diabetic amputations and make advanced regenerative healing accessible worldwide," said Dr. Manush Saydmohammed, Co-Founder and CEO. "Pittsburgh's world-class biomedical research ecosystem has provided the ideal foundation to take our science from the laboratory bench toward Phase I human clinical trials."

Next Steps on the Commercial Runway

Backed by an exclusive patent estate and strong preclinical data, ZegeneX is advancing Zegen-X5 through GLP toxicology and formulation scale-up, positioning the program for FDA Pre-IND submission and Phase Ib clinical evaluation.
